Why We Don’t Recommend Kenalog (‘Hay fever Jab’): Safety, Regulatory Guidance & Effective Allergy Care

Hay fever can be a persistent and frustrating condition for many people. Over the years, various treatments have been proposed to manage symptoms, including the use of Kenalog injections, sometimes referred to as the ‘hay fever jab’.

Kenalog (triamcinolone acetonide) is a steroid injection which is sometimes promoted online and on social media as a quick fix for hay fever or allergic rhinitis.

However, after careful consideration of safety concerns, regulatory guidance, and the availability of more effective allergy care options, we do not recommend Kenalog for hayfever treatment. Instead we focus on safe, licensed, evidence-based allergy care.

In this article, we will explain why, and offer practical advice on safer and more effective approaches to managing allergies.

📌 1. Kenalog Is Not Licensed for Hay Fever in the UK

Kenalog (hay fever jab) is a prescription-only medicine (POM). It is licensed for certain inflammatory conditions such as joint disorders, but it is not licensed in the UK for the treatment of hay fever or allergic rhinitis.

The UK regulator — the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) — and the Committees of Advertising Practice (CAP) have made this clear in enforcement guidance.

Clinics and advertisers must not directly or indirectly promote Kenalog injections for hay fever to the public. Advertising that suggests it is a hay fever treatment has been subject to regulatory action.

As the MHRA puts it, Kenalog should not be advertised as a hay fever treatment on social media, websites or other public platforms because this misleads people about its licensed use.

📌 2. Serious Safety and Drug Risk Considerations

Kenalog works by dampening the immune system’s inflammatory response. In hayfever, the immune system overreacts to allergens like pollen, causing symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, and itchy eyes. Corticosteroids can reduce this inflammation, but systemic steroids like Kenalog injections affect the whole body, not just the nasal passages.

This systemic effect can lead to unwanted side effects, especially when used repeatedly or in higher doses.

A recent report from the National Pharmacy Association (NPA) and community pharmacists across the UK has reiterated that Kenalog injections are not appropriate for hay fever and carry risks, especially if obtained from unregulated online sources. They also warn that some products marketed online may be fake, contaminated, or do not meet UK safety standards.

📌 3. Medicines Are Regulated for a Reason

Medication regulation in the UK ensures that products:

  • Are of the quality expected

  • Have robust evidence supporting their use

  • Have known safety profiles

  • Are licensed for specific indications

When medicines like Kenalog are used off-label (i.e., for conditions they are not licensed for), it places the responsibility entirely on the prescriber, and patients must be clearly informed about the lack of established benefit and the potential for harm.

Online purchases, in particular, pose a risk because:

  • Products may come from unregulated sources

  • They might be counterfeit or substandard

  • Dosing and sterility cannot be guaranteed

None of these risks apply to licensed hay fever treatments such as antihistamines, intranasal steroids, or allergen immunotherapy (desensitisation) when used appropriately.

📌 4. Evidence-Based Alternatives Work Better and Are Safer

For most people with hay fever, effective and safer licensed options include:

These treatments have robust evidence of safety and effectiveness, and are recommended by NHS clinical guidance for the treatment of allergic rhinitis.
